How to Slash your Household Expenses and Reduce your Debt

If you find yourself struggling to make ends meet in today’s economy, you are not alone. It has become increasingly difficult to keep up with rising prices, especially when many people have lost their jobs or experienced cuts in their wages. The only way to make it under these types of circumstances is to find ways to cut expenses from your day-to-day activities and your household budget.

If you find yourself falling short every month and nothing you cut from your budget seems to give you enough money to pay your bills, then the first thing you need to do is find a part-time job to work, along with your regular full-time job. If you are so short of funds that you can’t even come close to covering your expenses, then a 2nd job is probably the only way you will be able to make it. Although a 2nd job will be tiring, you will probably experience some rejuvenation once you start seeing the difference it will make in the debt you owe.

Quite possibly, there are several services you can do without at home if you need the money to pay your bills. Cable TV is one luxury item that is not a necessity. If you are paying a hefty price for a digital package or a satellite, consider switching to a cheaper package or doing away with it altogether.

If you own an expensive car, you may be better served by selling it and getting a much cheaper one. Cars can sap you of your money fast, with high insurance rates, steep car payments, and expensive gasoline.

High-speed Internet and land-line phones are two other unnecessary expenses (unless you work from home and need Internet access). Many people have switched to using cell phones for all of their calls and find that it is much cheaper than maintaining two phones. Two phones are a luxury and if you can make do with one of them, then you will see a significant difference in your monthly expenses.

If you spend a great amount of money on groceries each week, then you can save by using grocery coupons. Many online sites have coupons that you can print out and most Sunday newspapers have coupons included with the paper. If the coupons are for products you use, then you can expect to save several dollars, depending on the coupons being offered.

If you eat out with your co-workers several times a week, you should start brown-bagging your lunch instead. Eating out requires a substantial amount of money and you can save an unbelievable amount each week by eating in your office. Staying at work all day (instead of driving your car to lunch) will also save you gas money. In fact, if you and other co-workers live near each other, you might even consider car-pooling several days each week. This will save everyone gas, a precious commodity these days.

There are many other little ways to save money by cutting unnecessary expenses and you should review your current budget in order to determine where to cut. Anything that is not an absolute necessity is something you can do without until you get back on your feet again. Once you get everything back in shape, then you can start adding back the things that you miss the most. You may find, after doing without them, that you never needed them in the first place.
